Berber Weavers of the Atlas Mountains

Our Beni Ourain rugs are handwoven from 100% natural sheep’s wool over the course of 4 weeks by Berber women living in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Berber tribes have been weaving wool carpets for generations to keep warm during the harsh winters. The wool of sheep living in these mountains is of high quality, resulting in plush and soft carpets famously known as Beni Ourain rugs.

First, the wool is thoroughly washed in order to get it soft and clean, ensuring that the rug will be durable and have the perfect finish. Next, the women wire the wool before weaving the carpet over the course of weeks with motifs that represented their own life experiences. The resulting rug is always a work of art and expression of each woman’s individuality. The men of these communities then take these rugs to sell at local weekly markets to provide an income for their family.
