Expertly crafted by Börekçi
Börekçi’s curators travel through Turkey’s various regions to find beautiful handwoven Turkish rugs. The carpets they find are then professionally cleaned and restored and then sold in their shop in Istanbul. To date they have amassed a collection of thousands of these pieces of art.
Carpet weaving is a traditional art in Turkey dating back to pre-Islamic times. Over the centuries, many different cultures have come to Anatolia bringing with them their own understanding of patterns and rug weaving techniques.
Traces of Byzantine design can be detected in many of the carpets sold by Börekçi as well as traditional designs brought by Turkic peoples that migrated from Central Asia, and those of Armenians, Caucasian and Kurdic tribes either living in, or migrating to, Anatolia. The history of these rugs’ designs, motifs and ornaments thus reflects the political and ethnic history and diversity of the area of Asia minor.
